STEEL

Why Cold-Formed Steel!

  • Inorganic – will not rot, warp, split or crack
  • Termite resistant
  • Dimensionally stable – does not expand or contract with moisture content
  • Mold resistant
  • Higher strength-to-weight ratio than other building materials
  • Non-combustible – does not burn nor contribute fuel to the spread of fire that means reduced risk and insurance costs
  • Lighter than other framing materials which means material is easier to handle on job site and reduced foundation costs
  • Consistent quality – material and framing
  • Less scrap, less waste
  • Made from recycled material – sustainability/green (new steel is 77% recycled material)
  • Better and safer living conditions
  • Less short term and long term maintenance costs

Advantages

Insurance

With non-combustible commercial building construction, significant insurance premiums savings are possible for building owners, developers and general contractors using cold-formed steel framing.

Builders Risk Insurance
Builders Risk Insurance provides a substantial opportunity for premium reductions when comparing non-combustible construction to wood (Frame) construction. Builders Risk is a onetime expense to protect the structure during construction. Insurance premium savings can be greater than 50%.

Premium example:
 WoodNon-combustible
Project size: $10,000,000 $10,000,000
Constructions duration: 12 months 12 months
Premium (Base rate): $57,600 $21,600
Savings:   $36,000 (>60%)
Premium example provided by Holmes Murphy as an estimate only

Property Insurance

Property Insurance is an annual expense for the building owner and negotiated each year. Rates vary substantially based on many different items such as building use, fire protection, geographic location, proximity of other buildings and others. Comparing non-combustible construction to wood construction, annual premium savings up to 50% is possible.

Premium example: Assume a 20 year building life expectance.
 WoodNon-combustible
Project size: $10,000,000 $10,000,000
Years in service: 20 20
Property premium: $600,000 $300,000
Savings:   $300,000 (50%)
Premium example provided by Holmes Murphy as an estimate only

Workers Compensation

Determining rates for Workers Compensation are more complex and project specific. The main factors are general contractor and subcontractors claim history, classification of work, safety procedures and project payroll for each classification of work. Rates are negotiable. Non-combustible construction using cold-formed steel framing can provide savings over wood construction within a range of 15% - 50%.

Another Shade of GREEN

Green Standard

Green has become the corporate color of choice. Nuconsteel, a Nucor Company, realizes the importance of sustainability and the value for our environment. Sustainability can only be achieved when there is a balance between the social, economic and environmental needs of our communities and our workplace. Truly 'Green' construction is built around the concept of efficiency, waste reduction and recycling.

Today many owners, developers, architects and engineers understand the importance for building construction decisions to consider ‘Green’ during project development and construction. They also recognize Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) framing material is the right choice for residential and commercial projects to help meet certain sustainable needs. Cold-Formed Steel is durable which means it can last for hundreds of years. Cold-Formed Steel has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of all common building materials which can result in smaller foundations and design flexibility. The dimensional stability of the CFS shape means the structure will not move over the lifespan due to swelling, shrinking or warping of the framing materials. Cold-Formed Steel contains high recycled content and when the material outlives its useful life, the material is 100% recyclable and easily separated from the waste stream.

With attributes like these, CFS excels at meeting multiple green building program goals and objectives.

Green Building Programs
The US Green Building Council (USGBC), National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Green Globes are the three most common green building program organizations in existence today. The most widely recognized green building program today is LEED-NC for new construction. Many regional and local programs are in use and Nuconsteel has LEED AP and NAHB CGP expertise in-house to help maximize the green building value of your project and help you better understand program requirements.

LEED-NC
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System™ (LEED) is a third-party volunteer certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED provides building owners and operators with the tools they need to have an immediate and measureable impact on their building’s performance.

Why certify?
Certification provides independent, third party verification that a building project meets the highest performance standards. The LEED plaque is recognized nationwide as proof that a building is environmentally responsible, energy efficient, and a healthy place to live and work.

LEED certified buildings:
  • Are leading the transformation of the built environment
  • Are built as designed and perform as expected
  • Have lower operating costs and increased asset value
  • Are healthy and comfortable for their occupants
  • Reduce waste sent to landfills
  • Conserve energy and water
  • Reduce harmful greenhouse emissions
  • Qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances, and other incentives in hundreds of cities
  • Demonstrate an owner’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility
Cold-Formed Steel contributes significantly to LEED credits and can influence the entire project to add even more points. Below are LEED points that can be obtained for new construction using CFS (based on the entire project).

PointsMaterial & Resource CreditsCategoryFacts About Us
1 MR Credit 2.1 Construction Waste Management & Reduction - Easily Recycled – Steel used structural products has a recycling rate in excess of 98%.
- Factory built components reduces construction waste as much as 85%.
- CFS can be manufactured to exact specifications eliminating waste and added labor.
1 MR Credit 2.2
1 MR Credit 4.1 Recycled Content - Nuconsteel uses steel from Nucor, which is the largest recycler in the US, processing over 13 million tons of scrap in 2009.
-Nucor utilizes Electric Arc Furnace steel making which uses scrap steel as It’s primary feed stock.
1 MR Credit 4.2
1 MR Credit 5.1 Regional Materials - Nuconsteel/Nucor’s network of facilities are located throughout the US that are within 500 miles of almost any of your projects.
1 MR Credit 5.2
1+ * Many credits are eligible for “exemplary performance” points. Buildings framed using Cold-Formed Steel as a primary structural system can contribute significantly to meeting the credit thresholds.
1+ **Cold-Formed Steel may have an effect on other points as well. Consult NUCONSTEEL for more information.

NUCOR FACTS

Green Steel Process

Recycle

  • Nucor is the nation’s largest recycler, transforming over 13 million tons of scrap steel in 2009 into new high quality steel products.
  • Nucor uses Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology at all of its steel making facilities. EAF process uses post-consumer scrap steel material for the major feedstock, unlike blast furnace operations which use mined iron ore as the major feedstock.
  • Steel is the most recycled material in the world.
  • Over 2.6 million tons of appliances and almost 1.6 million tons of steel cans were recycled last year.
  • 5,400 BTUs of energy are conserved for every pound of steel recycled.

Reduce
Nucor uses the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) process of melting old steel and turning it into new steel. Compared to traditional steel making processes, the Nucor Steel making process:

Consumes fewer scarce resources:
A recycled ton of scrap metal conserves:

  • 1,400 lbs. of coal
  • 2,500 lbs. Iron ore
  • 120 lbs. of limestone
  • 1,700 kWh of electrical energy
  • Saves 83% of the total energy consumed in the traditional steel making process

Emits fewer pollutants:
A study by the Bender Corporation revealed the following results comparing an average integrated mill and an average EAF mill in terms of pounds of emissions of criteria pollutants per ton of steel produced:

 PM-10SoxNOxCOVOC
Integrated Mill 39.8 50. 0.4 44.0 14
Recycling (EAF) Mill .03 0.7 0.1 4.0 0.4
