Green Durability Learn why cold formed steel is one of the most durable building products on the market today.

The NU Green Read about Nuconsteel's commitment to being environmentally responsible.

Recycled Content Letter Nucor has prepared information to calculate the recycled content of products being used in “Green Building” applications or for projects in the LEED® program.

Steel Advantages in Green Building Systems

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program was developed by the USGBC (US Green Building Council) starting in 1995 and has seen several evolutionary changes.

The current individual programs include new commercial construction, new homes, core and shell only, commercial interiors, neighborhood development, schools, healthcare and retail and even existing building operations and maintenance. All programs are slight variations of the same basic set of goals – to design, construct and operate the greenest buildings in the world.

According to the LEED certification program, “recent trends in the building industry has shown a steady increase in eco-friendly projects which conform to green building standards. The dual target of such projects is to create environment efficient structures along with a sustainable framework which turns out to be economic as well.”

Cold-Formed Steel has the most direct impact in the LEED- NC (New Construction) program, specifically within the Materials and Resources section. Below are the basic explanations as to how Cold-Formed Steel can provide opportunities for credits including Construction Waste Management, Materials Reuse, Recycled Content and Regional Materials.
