The two-year research project will be led by Professor Benjamin Schafer, Ph.D., P.E., Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University; and by Professor Metwally Abu-Hamd, P.E., Department of Structural Engineering at Cairo University.
The project will result in a series of prototypes for optimized building framing solutions that largely focus on the demands of the Egyptian housing market but which also are expected to be applicable for other areas of the Middle East and in developing countries. The larger goal is to create residential housing that meets engineering performance and sustainability targets with much greater efficiency than current solutions.
According to Dr. Schafer, Nuconsteel was selected as the framing system because of the advanced technology and methods it has already developed for CFS construction, which will enable the project to make more rapid progress toward identifying the most efficient construction methods for steel framing.
