Nuconsteel Technology to be used in International Research study

Denton, TX (November 3, 2011) – Nuconsteel, an industry leader in cold-formed steel  (CFS) construction, today announced that is has been selected to provide construction expertise and the CFS framing system for an international research project that will produce a template for efficient and sustainable construction.

The two-year research project will be led by Professor Benjamin Schafer, Ph.D., P.E., Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University; and by Professor Metwally Abu-Hamd, P.E., Department of Structural Engineering at Cairo University.

The project will result in a series of prototypes for optimized building framing solutions that largely focus on the demands of the Egyptian housing market but which also are expected to be applicable for other areas of the Middle East and in developing countries. The larger goal is to create residential housing that meets engineering performance and sustainability targets with much greater efficiency than current solutions.

According to Dr. Schafer, Nuconsteel was selected as the framing system because of the advanced technology and methods it has already developed for CFS construction, which will enable the project to make more rapid progress toward identifying the most efficient construction methods for steel framing.

“Nuconsteel is proud to be part of this research project and to contribute our knowledge and expertise on the most efficient methods and technologies for building with cold-formed steel,” says Don Moody, General Manager of Nuconsteel. “New solutions are urgently needed to meet the housing demand in many markets around the world, and we think our experience can help accelerate the development of best practices for Egypt and also provide a template that could have global benefits.”

Nuconsteel is a leading manufacturer of light gauge steel framing products, systems and roll forming equipment for commercial and residential construction. Wholly owned by NUCOR, America’s largest steel producer and steel recycler, Nuconsteel is a proven innovator and developer of cold-formed steel framing for residential and commercial construction markets.
